Fibre to 75 Rooms: A Multi-Floor Fibre-Optic Network Build
Seventy-five rooms, three floors, and a requirement that rules copper out from the start: fibre to every room, spliced and terminated properly, with the documentation to prove it.
This building project — 25 rooms per floor across three floors — was delivered with multi-core single-mode fibre, floor ODFs, fusion splicing and per-link testing, end to end.
The Design
Fibre projects live or die on their topology. Here, multi-core single-mode backbone cable feeds each floor, landing on optical distribution frames (ODFs) that give every room’s fibre a proper, managed home — not a coil of loose tails behind a rack.
Single-mode was the right call for the building’s distances and its future: it carries today’s requirement without breaking a sweat, and the same glass will carry whatever bandwidth the building asks of it in ten years. Fibre done once, properly, is the cheapest network the building will ever own.
Splicing, Termination and Labelling
Every fibre was fusion-spliced — the low-loss, permanent method — and terminated at the ODFs with each core identified and dressed. Across 75 rooms and three floors, that’s a lot of glass, and a labelling scheme was applied throughout: every core traceable from room to frame.
Unlabelled fibre is a special kind of technical debt — invisible until the day someone needs to find one core among hundreds. This building won’t have that day.
Testing and Handover
Each link was tested before handover, floor by floor, and the installation documented: what runs where, spliced at which tray, landing on which port. The client received a fibre network that is not just installed but operable — extendable, maintainable and fully accounted for.
