What is access control?
Access control is a security system that manages who can enter a building, area or door, and when. Instead of physical keys, users present a credential — fingerprint, card, PIN or smartphone — which a controller checks against permissions before unlocking the door, logging every entry.

Common questions
What types of access control credentials are there?
The main credential types are cards and fobs, PIN codes, biometrics (fingerprint or facial recognition) and mobile credentials on a smartphone. Many UAE businesses combine two — for example card plus PIN for server rooms — to balance convenience with security for different areas of the building.
Can access control integrate with CCTV and alarms?
Yes. Integrated systems link door events to camera footage, so entries can be matched with video evidence, and can trigger alarms on forced or held-open doors. Integration works best when it is designed in from the start — ideally with one contractor responsible for the interfaces between systems.
What happens to access-controlled doors if the power fails?
Doors are configured as fail-safe (unlock on power loss) or fail-secure (stay locked), typically with battery backup so controlled operation continues through outages. Door behaviour must follow the building's approved fire and life-safety strategy: fail-secure locking is never permitted to compromise required emergency escape routes.
Is biometric access control allowed in the UAE?
Biometric access control is widely deployed in UAE workplaces, but it is conditional: biometric templates are sensitive personal data under the UAE Personal Data Protection Law, so deployments must comply with applicable data-protection requirements covering consent, storage, retention and deletion. Enrolment and data handling should be configured with this in mind from day one.
